The thermostat is the little thing on the wall you adjust when the house gets too hot or cold. Today, there are dozens of variants on the basic thermostat, all of which give you alternatives for temperature regulation and energy efficiency.

There are two basic types of thermostats. Line voltage thermostats control electric-based systems. Baseboard heating systems use line voltage thermostats. Low-voltage thermostats are used for centralized systems, such as furnaces, boilers, and heat pumps. A multi-use system with heating and cooling probably has a low-voltage thermostat.

Thermostat Features

A thermostat has two basic functions. When the air temperature reaches one set point, it turns the HVAC system on. When the temperature reaches a second set point, the thermostat turns the system off. Today, there are many kinds of thermostats with varying features, depending on what the user wants their system to do.

Manual Thermostats. The most basic type of thermostat, the manual thermostat, lets the user set the on and off points themselves. Manual thermostats typically do nothing more than that. This can lead to the air conditioner or heater running in empty houses if the owner forgets to turn them off.

Programmable Thermostats. A step up from a basic manual thermostat, programmable thermostats let users set temperature adjustments throughout the day. For instance, you can set the AC to come on just before you come home from work or adjust the heat to turn off at 72 degrees during the day. Programmable thermostats are useful in office buildings and large homes where different rooms are not in use at all times of day.

Smart Thermostats. Smart thermostats are programmable and have additional features like motion sensors that automatically shut off heating and cooling when nobody is in the room. Many smart thermostats can even adjust the temperature for maximum energy efficiency depending on weather conditions. Voice control and other features are available for some smart home systems.

A variation of the smart thermostat is Wi-Fi enabled, letting you control your household environment with a phone app. If you’ll be home late, remote access lets you tell your thermostat to keep the furnace off until you arrive, saving on energy bills and improving overall efficiency.

Benefits of Professional Installation and Service

The thermostat is a simple device so you may think you can buy one and install it yourself. In general, that isn’t a good idea. Your HVAC system is a complex piece of equipment. For optimum efficiency and energy savings, the thermostat must be compatible with the entire system.

When the experts from Eastern Shore Heating and Air Conditioning assess your HVAC system before recommending a new thermostat, we take all your requirements into consideration. Older homes may not have the capacity for a high-tech thermostat, so we will recommend the best option for your home within the capabilities of your existing equipment.

The thermostat should be part of your regular HVAC maintenance. We offer an annual service plan that includes checking all parts of your system so that everything runs at peak efficiency year-round.

Benefits of Replacing Your Thermostat

Just because your thermostat is working well doesn’t mean it can’t get better. A programmable or smart thermostat can save you money after installation. A common myth is that your furnace works harder to warm your house back up if you lower the thermostat. Actually, if your house is well-insulated, as most modern homes are, once your house is at a stable temperature, it does not lose heat to the surrounding environment.

A smart or programmable thermostat saves money and energy by keeping your home’s temperature steady and only heating or cooling the home when you’re in the residence. Studies have shown that lowering your daily temperature even seven degrees during the day saves up to 10% on your energy bills. Your furnace does not “work harder” raising the house temperature from 65 to 72 degrees after you return home, and you’ll still be comfortable while you go about your evening tasks.

Maintaining a slightly warmer house in the summer has the same effect. If you’re not home, there’s no reason to keep your house nicely chilled until you get back from work. Programming your thermostat to switch the AC on just before you come home can keep your utility bills down and still ensure your home is comfortable even in the Jersey heat.

Heating and cooling costs are only part of why smart thermostat installation is critical. Home energy usage and energy consumption are regulated by state and local utility companies. The less energy everyone uses, the less chance there is that companies will need to impose higher rates or rolling blackouts to accommodate excessive use in peak periods.

Thermostat Maintenance and Repair

Even a simple mechanism like a manual thermostat can cause issues with your heating and cooling system. As thermostats become more complex and computerized, they can malfunction in ways you can’t troubleshoot by yourself. Thermostat services are essential to keep your HVAC in top condition. Common thermostat problems can include:

  • Inaccurate readings, due to poor calibration after installation, damaged or worn sensors, or simply poor location. Thermostats placed near windows or heating or cooling vents can provide improper readings.
  • HVAC problems, such as failure to start or stop, short or long cycling, which may be due to short-circuits or loose wiring in the thermostat.
  • Programming issues. Incorrect settings, automatic resets due to power loss, and hardware or software glitches.
  • Dirt and debris in the sensors can cause the thermostat to malfunction.

Users can ensure their thermostat stays in good shape by keeping it clean and free of obstruction and replacing the batteries according to manufacturer instructions. You should also contact us whenever your HVAC system is not operating at peak effectiveness.
